Sunday Sermon … Opposition in the Christian Life

February 1st, 2009

John 15:18-25; 16:1-4

Jesus says the world will hate us. (15:18-19) …

… Because the world hates Jesus. (15:20-21) …

… And because Jesus’ message exposes sin and produces guilt. (15:22-25)

The opposition may take the form of:

1. Persecution – Government – check out voice of the martyrs.

2. Cultural bias – Kurt Warner shares his faith every chance he gets and the critics are starting to ask why. Warner always has his Bible at press conferences and thanks Christ after every game – win or lose – and some people don’t like it, but I admire it. Here’s an article about him

3. Criticism – Individual – you may be criticised by other individuals within your family or other close relationships just because you go to church. (Luke 12:51-53)

Jesus warns os of this opposition because he does not want us to be surprised or discouraged by it. (16:1-4)
