Sunday Sermon … The Holy Spirit is Speaking to You!

February 8th, 2009

John 15:26-27; 16:7-15

Let’s look at what Jesus says in John 16:7 real quick…

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

So, the disciples did not think it was good that Jesus was leaving them, but if He had stayed, the Holy Spirit would not have come into our lives. ….. We may also note that Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “him” which means the Spirit is more than a “force,” he’s an entity who has a close relationship with Christ. (He is Christ.)

The Holy Spirit is speaking to you about Jesus (15:26). … The Holy Spirit is from the Father, is the Counselor, and is the Spirit of Truth. … He testifies about Jesus. As we will see, everything goes back to Jesus. Jesus, in a sense, is the President and the Holy Spirit is the Press Secretary.

The Spirit speaks to you in two main ways: through the Bible and through the testimony of Christians (15:27), but he can also speak directly to you. We see an example of all three in Acts 8:26-40. … In John 14:26 we also see that the Spirit reminds us of important lessons. … John 16:13 shows us that the Spirit only tells us what the Father and Jesus allow him to and that if needed, he can inform us of the future which is how we got the book of Revelation.

If you are not a Christian, the Holy Spirit seeks to convict you of guilt (16:8-11).

  1. He exposes your sin (16:9(NIV)16:9(The Message)).
  2. He disputes your righteousness (16:10).
  3. He convinces you that you will face judgement (16:11).

If you have never felt the Holy Spirit then it’s because:

  1. You’ve not been awakened to it yet. (ex. little kids)
  2. There are other voices distracting you. You need to learn how to pick out the Holy Spirit’s voice of truth from the others
  3. You’ve ignored or rejected it.

If you are a Christian, the Holy Spirit seeks to guide you into truth (16:12-15).

Satan is a copy-cat. He will speak to you and try to trick you into evil. … Just remember, if the voice is not magnifying Jesus, then it’s not the Holy Spirit.
