Sunday Sermon … A Wide-Angle Sapshot of the Christisan Message
Songs:
“Majesty”
“Nobody Knows the Troubles I’ve Seen” – not quite the same version that was sung at our church, but still good.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Really, all of this passage is pretty self-explanatory.
1:16-17 – The theme of Romans: Through the rightousness of God you can be right with God.
This passage can broken down into three setions:
I. 1:18-3:20 – The wrath of God: You are in trouble with God.
- 1:18-32 – You are in trouble with God because of your sin/wickedness/godlessness.
- 2:1-29 – Even moral people are in trouble with God. … Don’t judge others and condemn yourself.
- 3:1-20 – No one is good. … How humbling. … From an earthly perspective, some people are “”better” than others, but from God’s perspective, much farther away than us, we are all equal.
II. 3:21-5:21 – The grace of God: You can be right with God.
- 3:21-31 – You can be justified by faith in God/Christ. … Here, the words “justified” and “rightousness” have the same root word in Greek.
- 4:1-25 – Abraham is an example of justification by faith. … Many people believe that before Christ died on the cross, people were saved by following the law. But why did they follow the law? Because they believed God would keep His promises (as He has). They had faith.
- 5:1-21 – Justification results in peace and joy!
III. 6:1-8:39 – The new life in Chriist: You can experience victory over sin.
- 6:1-23 – You have been united with Christ. You have a new life. … Some people think that with the grace given to us, we can live however we want, but they would be wrong.
- 7:1-25 – You still battle sin because your old nature hangs on. … It’s like a chicken. You cut off its head, but it keeps on kickin’.
- 8:1-39 – You experience victory through the Holy Spirit. … Whatever you feed, it will grow. Feed thew new life and it will prevail. Feed the old life and it will prevail.
Find yourself in these eight chapters and take the next step, whatever it may be.
