John 13:1-17
You probably know the story, but anyways…
Jesus is about to die on the cross and the day is Thursday and it’s also Passover. Jesus decides it’s time to show the full extent of His love by serving them and then dying for everyone on the next day.
To serve them, He washes their feet.
Then He gets to Peter…
Peter asks: “Lord, are you really going to wash my feet?”
Jesus’ reply: “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” (Jesus had a lesson plan!)
Peter basically says, “no Lord, You can’t wash my feet.” (Feetwashing was normally done by the lowliest of servants.)
Jesus: “Then you have nothing to do with me.”
Peter: “Oh, Lord, give me a full bath then!!”
Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” (A bath is for someone entering the Christian Faith, it is needed in order to be cleared of sin. … After we become Christians we must wash our feet/hands because we still sin.)
…
“Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. (We are to wash each other’s feet/hands… I beleive this means we are to hold each other accountable and serve each other. But we also must be willing to accept accountability and service from others.)
I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
